- Grows fast doubling its biomass every two to three days under ideal conditions. The only known limiting factor on its growth is phosphorus. An abundance of phosphorus (such as a chemical runoff from a lawn) can lead to Azolla blooms.

- It is a freshwater aquatic fern, with scale-like fronds 5–10 mm long, green to reddish, most often reddish in strong light and in winter.
- Covered in fine hairs giving the appearance of velvet
- It is able to fix nitrogen
- It can survive winter water temperatures of 5 °C, with best summer growth between 25-30 ºC
- Can not survive prolonged freezing
